PLANTING AND INSTALLING

(May 21, 2012)

• This week, we will again hoe the land, start planting seeds for the turf (so kids can walk and hang out on the grass), and install the benches with cement....if the rain doesn't come!

(April 30 - May 16, 2012)

• Herbicide was placed over the space in order to kill the dry grass and weeds and start anew. We will allow at least two weeks for the herbicide to work its magic.
• In the meantime, Mr. Cociorba or Nelu, will buy the materials for the benches and construct them at his house.

2ND PHASE

IRRIGATION SYSTEM

(April 25 - April 30, 2012)

• Bought the materials for the irrigation system with my colleague, Luminita Cociorba (the second leader of the project and main colleague with whom I collaborate) and her husband, Nelu Cociorba. Luminita is a history teacher and was the educational counselor and project leader in school until a month ago. She has supported me and my projects since I arrived. 
• She is the Romanian leader of the project and her husband will be donating his time to buying materials with us, installing the irrigation system and constructing the benches.
• Over spring break, not only did Nelu install the irrigation system under the land, but he and a couple of kids went and gathered large stones and boulders near the river for the courtyard.

1ST PHASE
"SAPTMANA ALTFEL"...a week like no other in which schools across the country try something new. A week full of extracurricular activities such as workshops, dance class, contests, etc. 
(Monday, April 2 - Friday, April 6, 2012)

• 30 to 40 volunteers joined myself, Mrs. Aurica (adiministrator at the school and one of the leader's of the project), and Petrica, a friendly groundskeeper, to begin "A GREEN NICHE for LIS". Mrs. Aurica has been in charge of taking care of the courtyard since I've been at school and will be in charge of keeping up the renovations after I leave.
• We dug up already planted flowers in order to replant them when the ground is healthier. 
• We went through the whole courtyard with a hoe thus digging up and mixing the soil in order to give the land a new start.   
• Pulled weeds.
• Help from a horse! A horse came on Thursday to help us. It had an instrument attached to it that helped hoe and rake the land better.
• Towards the end of the week, we made a circle around the middle of the courtyard and marked where we would be planting the previously pulled flowers.
• A new class just added to the high school, an advanced class of 5th graders, helped us replant the flowers in that space.
